1. Richard is a trouble maker, he acts without thinking, and doesn't think about the consequences until it is to late. For example when he went around town and wrote inapropriate words on their windows and his mother made him clean all of the windows by hand.

“I promised my mother that I would not fight, but I knew that if I kept my word I would lose my standing in the gang, and the gang’s life was my life.” (83)

Richard Wright is saying this quote after he gets home from the emergency room where he has received stitches on a wound that he got from a gang fight. It is also this point where Richard starts getting in trouble for serious things like gang fights and murder threats instead of little like writing curse words on windows with soap. When Richard is staying with his Aunt Addie she is going to beat him for something that he did not do. Fed up with getting beaten, especially for things he did not commit, he draws a knife from a drawer and threatens to stab his Aunt if she beats him. In conclusion, this passage shows how Richard goes from a young and curious person to a completely different dangerous young adult because as he says, “the gang’s life was my life.” (Mike)

"You ought to know God through some church." (150)

This quote is a significant passage because in chapter six of Black Boy, Richard is questioning God.  Richard doesn't believe God is real because of all the struggles he has gone through.  He feels that if God was real then he wouldn't have to go through all of the hard times he went through.  In this chapter his mother and grandmother are getting worried that Richard is going to keep getting into trouble so they bring him to church. At church he and other boys who don't believe in God get singled out and forced to get baptized.  This quote is important because it shows that Richard's family is starting to worry about Richard's actions and are trying to stop them from getting any worse. (Jordan)

"Having been thrust out of the world because of my race, I had accepted my destiny by not being curious about what shaped it." (288)

This quote is an important passage in the last section because Richard starts to feel that because of his race he can't play a role in the world's history.  He feels he can't be apart of history because no one will give the chance he needs to become what he wants to be.  At this point in the novel Richard just got laid off from the post office because the depresssion started and no one was sending mail.  When he got laid off from the post office he struggled to find a job and that is what caused him to feel he had no place in the world.  This quote is important because it shows that he has finally matured and wants to do something in his life, instead of changing jobs every month. (Jordan)
