What important thoughts and feelings does the character have? Use words and phrases from the book in your answer. Record them here along with page numbers
"The world was to me a secret which I desired to devine."(29)- Victor Frankenstein had the soul of an explorer in him. He was always researching new informeation, especially in the sciencentific field. He wants to feel acomplishment through science. He feels the real world is harsh and unsafe. He wants to advance in his research to find new discoveries.
" It was my temper to avoid a crowd and to attach myself fervently to a few. I was indifferent, therefore, to my schoolfellows in general; but I united myself in the bonds of the closest friendship to one among them." (29) - Victor is a very solitery person. He feels most at home when he is by himself in his lab away from the everday flow of society. He choses to isolate himself from his others to focus on his work. Of all the people in the city of Instoldt, he only befriended one individual. Other than Henry Cervial, Victor is an outsider to almost all of the city.
At this point in the book, how does the main character define who he is? Part of the idea of alienation and isolation comes as people struggle to find their identity. Find several quotes from the novel that illustrate this struggle for identity. List the quotes (with page numbers) and explain how they show this struggle.
At this point in the novel, Victor Frankenstein believes he has gone mad. He believes he must be insane to slave away for two years in order to create a monster. He did not contact his family, nor did he come outside of his basement. Victor is an outcast, and even at school he was thought to be different. He is an isolated man, even though he has friends and family who love and long for his company. He separates himself from people and in a way is a bit of a loner and depressed man.
"I was indifferent, therefore, to my schoolfellows in general." (p. 29) This quote shows how he was alienated and thought of as different in school. He was not like the other kids and had a passion for science, even at a young age. He had only one friend by the name of Henry Clerval who was a bit different as well.
"She died calmly; and her countenance expressed affection even in death." (p. 36) Victor's mother died when he was the age of seventeen. This tragic event may have triggered him to create his monster. He may of thought that if a loved one was taken away from him, then he should have the ability to create new life. Also, this may be part of the reason why he sort of withdraws from his loved ones and works alone in his basement for two years. The event was traumatic and it may have caused him fear to get close to anyone else, for if they die, he would go through the same experience again.
Significant Passages (include names an page numbers)
"Other lesson were impressed upon me even more deeply. I heard of the differences of sexes; and the birth and growth of children;how the father doated the smiles of the infant..." (102 Monster)- The monster is beginning to understand how the world really works. He is learning how humans have come to this civilized manner upon which he has become knowledgeble on. This shows how the monster is developing a desire for acceptance, and more importantly, a family. Knowlege is power, and the monster has now, within a short perio of time, become very wise to the inner workings of society and human civilization. Sean S. Period 4- 4-10-08
